Can You Copy a Broken Key?

When the key to your door breaks, it is always cheaper to replace the key than it is the lock. But what do you do when you snap your only key? Is the only option to replace the lock? Or can you copy a broken key?

The good news is, a broken key can indeed be copied successfully.

However, there are a few things that you will need to take into account.

  1. How bad is the damage?
  2. If it is snapped, do you have all the pieces? If half the key is still in the door you will need to retrieve it. Alternatively, call out a locksmith to retrieve it for you.
    1. Note: For car keys having both parts of the key may not be necessary. Some car locks have a key code stamped on them, a locksmith can use this information to access the manufacturers’ specs and cut a key accordingly.
  3. Does the key have any restrictions? Registered keyways are restricted to certified locksmiths.

When a locksmith has your broken key, they will then determine if they are able to copy it. For most keys, this will be a simple task for any experienced locksmith. They will measure the cuts on the key and use that information as a guide to cut your key to code.

However, this can be a problem when dealing with cheap or imported locks. In this case, the manufacturers’ specifications may not be available to the locksmith. They will then have to decide from the key alone if they can successfully duplicate the key to code.

Never throw out a good lock because of a broken key. Most keys can be copied by an experienced locksmith saving you time and money.
