How to Get Keys Out of a Locked Car

How to Get Keys Out of a Locked Car

You think it will never happen to you but then one day it does – you lock your keys in your car. Your first point of call is not to panic – there are multiple steps you can take to get keys out of a locked car.

And since we deal with car lockouts all the time, we decided to share some of the ways you can get your keys to get back on the road again.

Steps for How to Get Keys Out of a Locked Car

1. Start with the Obvious

The first thing you should consider if your keys get locked in the car or trunk is whether you can get hold of a spare key. If so, you can ask a friend or family member to help you out. The only problem is if your house keys are also in your car, which means you probably can’t access your spare key anyway. In the future, you might want to leave your spare key with someone you trust. And, if you don’t have a spare key at all, now is a good time to make a copy.

2. Break a Window

The next option would be to break a window. However, this is not recommended because you are causing unnecessary damage. The only time this step is recommended is if an animal or small child is stuck in the car and there is no time to waste.

3. Create a Hook

If you can get access to any object that can be used to create a hook or lasso, this might help you get your key out of a locked car. A hanger or shoelace is a popular choice. If you do have one of these handy, the next step would be to pry the window or door open to insert it so that you can pull the door lock up. Again, unfortunately, this option can lead to damage. If you must pry something open, rather opt for the window as this generally results in the least damage.

4. Try a Tennis Ball

There is a lot of mixed feedback about whether this method actually works, but it’s worth a try. If you can get your hands on a tennis ball, burn or cut a small hole in it – the hole should be big enough to fit over your keyhole. Press the tennis ball as hard as you can over the keyhole so that it creates a suction. This suction is said to unlock the door.
