Is It Cheaper to Rekey or Replace a Lock?

Most homeowners are surprised to discover they have the option to rekey a lock instead of replacing it entirely. Which is the cheaper, more convenient option though?

To rekey a lock, a locksmith would need access to the lock cylinder, which often requires the temporary removal of the lock from the door. The pins inside the cylinder are then changed and rearranged so that they work with a new key.

Rekeying a lock is far more cost-effective than replacing a lock entirely. This is because a locksmith only needs to alter the key pins, which are incredibly inexpensive. As an added bonus, rekeying locks is also a quick process. On completion, any spare keys you no longer have access to will no longer open the doors of your home.

Rekeying only becomes an issue if you are looking to enhance the security of your locks.

If you want to either customize or upgrade the locks of your home, it makes more sense to replace them completely. As you can imagine, this would be more expensive because you’re replacing the entire unit. How costly a new lock is depends on the type of lock you want to install, how many locks you want to replace, and how long it will take for the installation.

In the end, whether or not you should rekey or replace a lock depends on your specific needs as well as your budget.
