What Should I Do If My Car Key Won’t Turn in the Ignition?

When you need to get somewhere but your car key won’t turn in the ignition, what are you meant to do? The good news is that there are a few things you can try to rectify the problem.

Let’s start with the basics.

Before you confirm that your key won’t turn, try turning the steering wheel right and left to make sure it isn’t locked. If there is a lot of resistance, rather move on to the next solution, which is to lubricate the lock. It’s not uncommon for an ignition cylinder to jam, which can prevent your car key from turning. A silicon or graphite-based lubricant is best.

If you have your spare key handy, try using it in the ignition. If the key turns and your car starts, the problem is with your original key. If this is the case, make sure you create a spare copy as soon as possible so that you aren’t left with just one working key.

Wynwood Locksmith can assist you with key copies and replacements for almost any type of vehicle.

As a last resort, you may need to end up replacing the ignition cylinder, which a locksmith can also assist you with. You could do this yourself, but a locksmith will do it correctly the first time, which reduces the risk of further damage.

If your car doesn’t want to start, don’t panic. There are ways to fix the issue, most of which are simple enough.
